5th & 6th Grade Class

Welcome to fifth/sixth grade.   My name is Alyce Bakker.  I have been a teacher since 1998, prior to that I was a full time missionary and then an at home mother and foster parent.  My husband and I have 7 kids, 3 grandchildren, and were foster parents to 73.  This is my second year teaching at Covenant.  I taught at Calvary Christian School for 16 years and Special Education for 1 year in a public school. I have an Associates of Science, Bachelor’s degree in Education and I have an endorsement as a Learning Behavioral Specialist (LBS1).  I feel blessed to be part of Covenant’s staff.

The first aspect of education is to teach students who they are in Christ, and what purpose God has for their life.  In order to accomplish this, I, the teacher, am first accountable to the Lord.  I then use the talents the Lord gave to me for God’s Glory.  I am an image-bearer of the Lord and must model Christ-likeness to my students.  “For in Him we live, and move, and have our being” (Acts 17:28, KJV)  I am called to prepare students to understand that Christianity is not just religious truth, but Total Truth.

I believe teaching is a calling; I am compelled to devote my effort and time to my students and to improve my teaching skills to benefit each child.  As a teacher my learning is never complete, I need to be a lifelong learner. It is my desire to share that love of learning with my students. I find great pleasure when a student’s “light bulb” lights up when a new idea or concept finally makes sense. I enjoy being part of that discovery.

3rd & 4th Grade Class

II Timothy 2:15 (NIV) Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.

I think it critical to properly prepare students for grading from the first day of school. Goals are made completely clear and expectations established at the very beginning. Materials that are to be learned should be clearly identified and emphasis made to the students that they will be tested on their understanding of the materials.

I tell my students regularly throughout the day that my job is to teach…their job is to learn. To do that they must listen, participate and apply what they hear and see. I ensure they understand they will be measured and assessed, and that I expect their best. When a student is not attentive I will stop the lesson and direct his/her attention back to the lesson at hand. At that time there is a discussion with the whole class as to the importance of attentiveness. They are then reminded of my job to teach and their job to learn. If they are not attentive they will forfeit their opportunity in the learning process; thus, they will not do well on the test that will cover the material at hand. At this time I review with the class Proverbs 10:14, as well as other verses.

Reviewing before a test is essential in their learning process.

A quiz, given within a short period of time after the material to be learned, provides a measurement of immediate understanding. A test given at the end of a section will provide a measure of learning retention over a longer period of time. A final test will give a measure of overall subject retention. A final quarter grade shows the cumulative measure of all of the student’s efforts including classroom participation and interaction, physical work done in the classroom, homework, projects, and testing. A complete picture-not limited to simply test grades.

Ephesians 3:20 (NIV) Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us.

1st & 2nd Grade Class

Welcome to 1st and 2nd grade! My name is Megan Lee and this is my first year of teaching at Covenant Christian School. I grew up in the Chicagoland area and married my high school sweetheart, David,  in college. I graduated from Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Developmental Reading. I taught my first year in Webb City, MO where I taught 4th grade. After that, we moved back home to be near our family and I taught for several years at Calvary Christian School where I taught 1st grade, kindergarten and 5th grade. After that I stayed home with my daughter Tessa for a few years and homeschooled her for preschool and kindergarten. I am so excited to be here and be a part of the Covenant Christian School family. I feel so truly blessed to be here.

Vision statement
My passion is to educate and grow young minds. I strive to create a classroom environment that fosters learning and student growth. Every child learns differently. God gives each and every one of us strengths and weaknesses. It’s so important to encourage a child to press harder into their strengths and to be there to help and guide them through their weaknesses. I love being able to implement multiple teaching styles to reach those students who don’t learn in just the typical format. Every child is a true gift from God and I feel so blessed that I am able to be there every day to help these students grown academically and spiritually in their relationship with God.
